COVID-19 Coronavirus Update March 16, 2020

Parents and Families of our Helena Public Schools,

We are nearing the end of an unusual Monday. While I know that this crisis is challenging to us all, the Helena Public Schools are thankful for your continued support. Every email volunteering time to help deliver meals to students in need has lifted my heart and we are all appreciative.

Below are a number of updates pertaining to continued food services, technology checkout options and other related news pertaining to our closure.

Food Service: Grab & Go Options:

Our final day of free, on-campus meals will be tomorrow, Tuesday, 3/17 (to-go only, breakfast and lunch). Beginning on Wednesday 3/18, we will move to free grab & go options at eight specific regional sites. The below schools will offer free meals every weekday. While the school buildings will be closed, we will utilize mobile food distribution options (think foodtruck) located at each of the below schools at the listed, specific times. Lunch will be provided along with breakfast for the following morning (two meals at once). No identifiable information will be needed for any child, ages 1 to 18. However, we ask that children 5 and younger be accompanied by an adult. These meals are completely free for any/all interested in these grab & go options.

We are working to provide a link in which families will be able to select one of the below locations and request their needed number of grab & go bags. Please see forthcoming communication for that link. In the interim, please remember that meal services will be available at all HSD schools tomorrow, 3/17, for breakfast and lunch. Food services move to the below, regional sites beginning Wednesday, 3/18.

8 Regional Grab & Go Meal Locations/Times

  • –  Rossiter Elementary: 11:00 am to 11:30 am
  • –  Four Georgians Elementary: 11:00 am to 11:30 am
  • –  Broadwater Elementary: 11:45am to 12:15 pm
  • –  Warren Elementary: 11:50 am to 12:20 pm
  • –  Bryant Elementary: 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm
  • –  Smith Elementary: 12:45 pm to 1:15 pm
  • –  Central Elementary: 1:15 pm to 2:00 pm
  • –  Kessler Elementary: 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm

Chromebook Checkout Sites and Schedule:

Chromebook checkout will occur on Wednesday, 3/18 for anyone in need of a device. Please note that many students will not need to checkout a Chromebook as all of our online/virtual resources will be available through any personal computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone. If your child needs a device to access online/virtual resources, checkout will occur at every HSD school at the below times. To checkout a device, a student simply needs to provide their name and school. We will also ask each person if they also need Wi-Fi internet services as we continue to narrow options for providing forthcoming hotspots to students in need of internet access. Please know that Chromebook devices will be internet ready should you already have Wi-Fi access. Chromebooks have been cleaned, sanitized and bagged for personal use.

Chromebook Checkout Schedule: Wednesday, March 18

  • –  8:00 am to 12:00 pm – Chromebook checkout at HHS, CHS, PAL, HMS and CR Anderson
  • –  12:00 pm to 4:00 pm – Chromebook checkout at every HSD elementary school

Tomorrow, you will receive additional information pertaining to remote learning for your child/children. Our virtual/online environment will utilize Clever as a single sign-on portal to available educational resources. Complete directions will be included in tomorrow’s update. Additionally, along with many generous offers during this time of crisis, Charter Communications is offering free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. To enroll call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. This is just one of many thoughtful and helpful ways our community and nation can pull together in support of one another during this challenging time.
